LETTER TO THE EDITOR:

On behalf of Unity Thrift and Rescue, I would like to share with you a small amount of information concerning our animal rescue. The day starts with phone calls as early as 7am and usually ends about 10pm daily, sometimes two phones ringing at once. Most calls are about animals that need to be placed immediately. We have few homes to place animals in. Before we take animals to the rescues in San Luis Obispo and Ojai, these animals have to be tested for temperament,

food aggression, and Guardia, a deadly disease, if not treated.

Once the animals are classified as adoptable, they are driven to these shelters. The vehicles transporting kennels and blankets have to be disinfected between each trip, which can be as early as the next day.

The calls we receive are many time heart breaking, with momma dogs screaming in the background, having been in labor for two days or having to take two litters of seven puppies each, only four weeks old, or they would have been thrown in the aqueduct.

The reasons people can’t keep the animals vary, from losing their homes or jobs, abuse of the animals, or no food for the families or their pets. Many are just abandoned.

I opened Unity Thrift because my heart ached for the people and animals of this community. I could only do so much. God has blessed me with a great team of caring people. These friends volunteer their time, energy, knowledge, and often times, their money to help this cause.

My husband and I also teach the 12 step program at NLC, which is another time commitment in my life for the people of this community. I am now and have been for awhile, having health issues. My doctor has advised me to get rid of the stress in my life or the consequences could be very bad.

I am sorry to say with such a heavy heart, that I am going to have to close Unity Thrift Store and discontinue the animal rescue. We will be having a “Going Out of Business” sale, and all the money raised, after paying bills, will go to spay and neutering animals for low income families that we have selected.

I sincerely apologize if we were unable to help with your pet. I can safely say that we have saved at least 900+ animals.

I would like to give a special thank you to all my volunteers for their tireless efforts. The dog groomers that took the time to beautify the animals before we took them, bows included, enabling animals to be noticed first and get homes faster. Kudos, ladies.

Finally, anyone struggling with drugs and depression please come to our 12 step program. My prayer for this community is to see it drug free, and all the animals have a loving home to live in.

I am looking forward to seeing Mike Long and Diane Van Trees of the Westside Humane Society, help the animals as much as we did. Good Luck!

Everything we did was with great love and compassion for the animals, never about finances. What mattered most was getting the animals forever homes.

God Bless,

Linda Hodges & Team
